Whenever you might need to complain about damaged goods, incorrect content delivery or faulty merchandise, writing a letter is an appropriate way to express your concerns and request a refund. The same may be needed to request a refund from your travel insurance. The following tips could serve as a guideline.

1. First of all, you have to read your travel insurance policy in detail. Pay special attention to the following items:
- Excesses - some minor travel expenses may not be covered as they do not exceed the minimum threshold. So if you happen to visit a doctor or have your camera stolen, your claim may not be approved.
- Expensive goods - some travel insurances define maximum costs of the items they provide coverage for. So you'd better leave your real Rolex at home than take it to the beach with you.
- Maximum coverage - for cases of personal responsibility (if you hurt somebody or their property by accident) or medical treatment since some bills can turn out to be enormous.

2. Verify the contact information. Check the address and the name of the person to whom you send the letter as well as the contact data of people involved into the accident. Call the company or check the website to find out whom to ask for a refund.

3. Express your concern in the letter clearly and briefly. State the causes of the incident and describe the character of the damage or loss you suffered.

4. Request precisely what you want to acquire as a result of your letter. Point out whether you expect a full or partial refund according to the circumstances.

5. Get proof of ownership. It's important to provide the insurer with confirmation that you owned the item which you lost or had stolen. Make an immediate report to the travel representative, hotel manager or baggage handlers to make things straight there and then. Copies of receipts, purchase orders, invoices, incident report numbers or other supporting documents stating the costs of the merchandise should be enclosed into your letter.

6. Be sincere with your Travel Insurer. Notify them about all the risk you could run on your holiday, i.e. dangerous activities or sports. Being honest with the insurer will only help to settle the situation. Claiming that you were stolen a full bag of money while your were resting on a chaise lounge will hardly sound as a true scenario.
